MEXICO CITY, September 14 (Hfrance.fr) - Mexican authorities on Tuesday rescued 22 foreigners, mostly Cubans and Haitians , who were kidnapped earlier today when gunmen stormed a hotel in central San Luis Potosi state, the procurator said.general of the region.
The gunmen also kidnapped 16 Mexicans when they ransacked the Sol y Luna hotel in Matehuala, about 195 km (120 miles) north of the city of San Luis Potosi, the regional capital.
The Mexicans were released earlier but the foreign nationals were had to be rescued in a remote area near the road between Matehuala and the regional capital, Arturo Garza Herrera, state attorney general, said in a statement.
Foreigners were to be transferred to the city of San Luis Potosi for food and medical treatment. Garza 's office gave no details of the rescue or indicated whether any of the strangers were injured.
While most of the foreigners rescued were Haitians and Cubans, earlier there were reports that Venezuelans were amongi them, Garza's office said in a statement. Among them were three minors and a pregnant woman.
"I will notify the migration institute so that they can intervene because we do not know not the migration status of these people "said Garza.
Many migrants who hope to reach the United States face great danger on the way , with kidnappings, extortions, rapes and even murders reported. Some are enlisted to work for drug cartels who fight for drug trafficking routes.
