Google Google Maps uses the magnetometer of your Android device to determine the direction in which you are heading. To improve the location accuracy of your device, you must calibrate your compass in the appGoogle Maps cation. Here's how.
Your device needs a magnetometer for the compass function to work, and almost all Android smartphones have it. You must also install the Google Maps Android app . , if it is not done yet.
These instructions should work on all recent versions of Android.
Checking the direction of Google Maps Accuracy
Before calibrating your compass, check whether the direction of your device is correctly indicated in the Google Maps application.
Open the Google Maps app on your Android device, then find the blue circular icon indicating your location. If it’s not visible, tap the circular bubble icon in the lower right corner.
This will display your location, as far as Google Maps understands. The direction of your device is represented by a blue flashlight-style beam around the circular location icon.
If the beam range is too large, Google Maps will usually ask you to calibrate your compass. If not, you need to calibrate it manually.
Calibrate your Android compass in Google Maps
If Google Maps does not work calibrate your compass automatically, you must perform a manual calibration. Open the Google Maps application, making sure that the icon location of your blue circular device is clearly visible.
Press the iconlocation to view more information about your location. At the bottom, press the "Calibrate compass " button.
This will display the compass calibration screen. The current accuracy of your compass should be displayed at the bottom as low, medium or high.
While holding your device and followingt the method shown on the screen, move your phone about three times, tracing an eight in the process.
Google Maps will alert you once you have successfully calibrated your device, automatically returning to the main application screen.
If the calibration process was successful, the scope of your directional beam should be reduced, thereby improving the accuracy of your position in the process.
