A great way to keep sensitive and written documents like W9, contracts and living wills is to store them digitally. This guide shows you how to scan a document in Windows 10 without installing third-party tools.
Generally, you can scan a document using the software provided by the manufacturers. Printers and Scanners usually come with an optical disc containing thedrivers and the necessary tools. Manufacturers also make their drivers and tools available online if your PC does not include an optical drive.
For example, this guide uses the Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 All-in-One as an example. In addition to the drivers, the software suite installs eight separate tools for printing CD labels, scanning, updating software, and more.
Since manufacturers do not provide identical software suites on all printers and scanners , this guide uses two native Windows tools instead: Microsoft Scan and Windows Fax and Scan.
Of course, always default your manufacturer's software for a personalized experience for your specific scanner. If you don't want third-party tools installed on your PC, however, both Microsoft solutions should do the trick.

Is your scanner compatible with Windows 10?
Before continuing, we must make a few comments. First, the manufacturer of your scanner may provide drivers for Windows 10, but the device itself may not specifically support the platform.
For example, we tested the following tools using the Canon PIXMA MG3520 all-in-one with an integrated scanner. The "recommended" drivers date back to July 2015, although Canon released a more recent sequel six months later. It is still three years old software.
That said, the scanner part of this AIO printer would not appear in native Windows tools but was working properly - using a wireless connection, in fact - via Canon software.
If you are experiencing similar issues, you may have an older printer or scannern which is not fully compatible with Windows 10. The device may also require a direct USB connection if it is used outside the manufacturer's third-party tools. For AIO printers, you may need to change its networking settings so that your Windows 10 PC recognizes the scanner component in addition to the entire printer.
This tool is a visual upgrade to the old fax and scanning tool from Microsoft. It offers most of the same functionality, depending on your printer, but removes the fax and email components.

With "Color Mode, you can scan documents in color, grayscale or sharp black and white. Meanwhile, the “Resolution (DPI)” setting allows you to change from 100 to 300 DPI.
If you select "Feeder " as the scanning source, two options additional appear. As shown below, you can choose the paper size (A4, Legal or Letter) and enable / disable the scanning option on both sides of your document.
With the three sources, the parameter " File type " offers four options: JPEG, PNG, TIFF and Bitmap. We provides a separate article explaining the benefits of each format In short, however, JPEG and TIFF formats generally provide high quality results, although TIFF files also support transparent backgrounds. PNG files are ideal for online publishing and BMP files are raw, uncompressed images.
Finally, you will see the option "Save the file in ". It is set to "Scans " by default and places your scanned documents in a "Scans " folder located in your "Images " folder. The appropriate path is:
