US expands list of companiesits restricted and government labs whose supercomputing capabilities are "used by Chinese military actors, its destabilizing military modernization efforts and / or its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs, " the US Commerce Department said in a statement Thursday.
Inclusion on the list of entities, as it is called, means that these groups must request licenses from the Commerce Department if they wish to obtain products from US suppliers, Reuters noted.

"High-performance computing capabilities are vital to the development of many - perhaps almost all - modern weapons and national security systems, such as nuclear weapons and hypersonic weapons," the secretary said. Commerce Gina Raimondo in a statement.
Additions to the list are: Tianjin Phytium Information Technology Shanghai high-performance integrated circuit design center, Sunway Microelectronics, Jinan National High Performance Computing Center, the National Supercomputing Center Shenzhen, N ational Supercomputing Center Wuxi, and National Supercomputing Center Zhengzhou.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Supercomputers are used for physical simulations that model explosions ofnuclear weapons. The United States has spent billions of dollars on supercomputers designed to support the nation's stockpile of nuclear weapons.
