Jamey Smith seems to be getting into the habit of creating Friday crossword puzzles.
FRIDAY PUZZLE - Some builders love to create themed puzzles and some like to create them without theme.
This is only his third crossword for Hfrance.fr, but so far Jamey Smith belongs to the latter category. His three puzzles took place on a Friday.
I would say he is doing quite well.until now. In this puzzle, Mr. Smith makes his debut with eight entries, and most of them are very lively. I especially liked TAKING THE HAUTE ROUTE, THE SPECIAL SAUCE, REBOUND, WHAT ABOUT BOB and GROUP THERAPY.
The hint is also a good balance between pun and general knowledge, which makes a nice entry into our weekend of solving.
15A. I have the impression that DAFT means "stupid" or "stupid" more than NUTSO. Your mileage, as always, may vary.
23A. Really nice steering mistake. One way people can miss each other a lot is being apart (real pandemic vibes out there), but if you still miss calls you're playing PHONE TAG.
30A. It is an examplethe interesting one - for me, anyway - of how to distinguish a noun hint from a verb hint.
On the surface, you might assume that the clue "Eye, in foul language" refers to the verb "to look at someone". We see it says OGLE and LEER in puzzles, but those don't fit in that six letter slot. OGLED, OGLES = don't match either, and it's bad weather anyway, just like OGLING. Remember, the times of the clues and the answers must match.
So what do we do? (Hint: "Give up" is not the correct answer.)
We are thinking that other "eye" could mean. Someday, when I have time, I'm going to make a line of T-shirts that say "What is else it might mean? "just to remindfor people to use their lateral thinking.
The eye in this clue is the real body part and a name, and the slang term is PEEPER.
41A. The "Precursor to a big flop? " Is TERA, as in TERAflop, a unit of computational speed equal to one million millions (10¹²) floating point operations per second.
61A. This "stock holder?" is not a person, but a PEN who owns cattle. The clue of the clue? It's two words. Shareholder as far as investing is concerned is a word.
7D. A "Performer with a single fan? " Wouldn't do very well on social media (especially if that fan was the artist 's mother), but we're supposed to be thinking of a collapsible fan. The answer is GEISHA.
44D. That "class ring? " Is not the kind you wear, this is the kind you are desperately waiting for. It is the BELL which signifies the end of a class.
