Ethics of Engineering - Moral Leadership
Engineers, within their communities and professions, contribute to the technological process, as managers, entrepreneurs, business consultants, academics and government officials, they provide many forms of leadership in the development and implementation of technology. Leadership can be understood as the success of moving a group forward collectively towards goals.
Moral leaders are the individuals who lead, motivate, organize, creatively manage, or lead groups toward morally valid goals. Leaders may or may not be in a position of authority within a company. Leadership can be demonstrated by participating individuals at all levels of the organization.
TheMorally Creative Leaders
Moral leaders are morally creative. This does not mean that they discover or improvise new moral values out of thin air. Moral values are the product of centuries and millennia of progressive development, not instantaneous invention. Moral creativity is about identifying the most important values that apply to a particular situation, highlighting them through effective communication within groups, and forming viable commitments to implement them.
Moral creativity is success through new ways of thinking with standard moral values. This is achieved by identifying new possibilities for applying, extending and practicing values rather than inventing new values for temporary comfort. But it requires new moral perspectives with deeper commitments based on integrity..
Participation in professional societies
Professional societies do more than promote the continuing education of their members. They also serve to unify a profession, to speak and act on its behalf. Professional societies provide a forum to communicate, organize and mobilize change within and through large groups, which has a moral dimension. After a few incidents, many of the tensions that existed in professional societies are due to uncertainties about their involvement in moral issues.
Effective professional activity, whether in engineering or any other profession, requires a substantial degree of trust on the part of clients and the public. The complete absence of such trust would compromise the possibility of concluding contracts, engaging in cooperative work, exercising professional autonomy without excessive regulation and labor.iller under human conditions. Building and maintaining this trust is an important responsibility shared by all engineers. This is also an area where moral leadership in professional societies is really important.
Leadership in communities
In communities and groups, issues that are disturbing and important to everyone should be made aware. But the strongest obligations arise for those who, through their professional experience, are well anchored in specific issues as well as for those who have the time to train themselves as public advocates. This shows that there is certainly a need for moral leadership to identify and expand the areas of possible good that can be achieved.
The ideals of voluntary service
The need for moral leadership in engineering, emphasizes the need to get involved in professional societies and in the servicecommunity ice. Managers must have a substantial involvement in professional societies which, in addition to developing technical knowledge and representing engineers collectively, help to establish high standards of moral integrity within the profession. Moral leadership should also be involved in community service. Moral leadership is not about moral elitism and domination, but rather moral creativity to help guide, organize, and stimulate groups toward morally desirable goals.

All these companies have proposed different codes of ethics while awaiting the adhesion of engineers, to the highest standard of ethical conduct. This not only helps companies but also engineers.
The NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) has formulated codes because engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for everyone. Accordingly, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness and equity and must be dedicated to the protection of public health,safety and well-being.
The basic things to keep in mind while engineers perform their professional duties are as follows -
Keep the safety, health and well-being of the public first.
Provide services only in the area of their competence.
Make public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
Act for each employer or client as loyal agents or trustees.
Avoid deceptive acts.
Conduct yourself in an honorable and responsible manner, ethically and legally, in order to enhance the honor, reputation and usefulness of the profession.
All other companies have proposed the code of ethics to be followed in their respective disciplines, by engineers. Professional ethics must be accompanied by moral concerns, inresponsible for the profession while being within ethical limits.
