Release date: iPhone Flip launch is a moving target
It's no secret Apple is targeting a foldable iPhone. The company has been filing patents for folding mechanisms and devices for almost a decade now with no launch date in sight. The question is whether one of them will see the light of day, and if so, when?
The "early rumors pointed to 2021 as a potential target date, but a report by longtime Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo ( via " MacRumors ) suggests 2023 " could be more realistic , if it ever happensuit. According to Kuo, Apple still has to work out tech and mass production issues before releasing a device like this, hence the two-year wait.

Design: what will the Foldable iPhone lo ok like?
The 2023 calendar would correspond to a report " from Bloomberg earlier this year that indicated Apple already has a iPhone folding screen prototype . While not yet a working model, it is a step up from a patent which, until then, was all we had seen.

Apple appears to have filed tAll patents under the sun when it comes to foldable display stands, including an origami-style foldable display stand, flip-up display, and even a wrap-around display. And while we don't know which one will make the final cut, Kuo and Bloomberg both seem to agree that the current prototype is more of a traditional fold-out design that would open to a 7.5- or Main 8 inch screen .
Unlike Microsoft 's " Surface Duo , which has the hinges on the outside, Apple is said to have a continuous screen with a hidden hinge mechanism like the Galaxy Fold .
However, Apple leaker Jon Prosser reported in early 2021 that the iPhone "Flip will probably use a clamshell design and come in several " fun colors . "Enter the flashy iPhone "violet 12 , the " new blue and pink option for iPhone 13 , a fun color gamut for Apple 's first foldable device is definitely a possibility.
YouTuber ConceptsiPhone also gave us a preview of what the iPhone Flip might look like with concept art from the Foldable iPhone in the colors blue, red, gold and green.
Roadblocks: what's still blocking Apple?
Corning is working on foldable glass for foldable phones. Richard Peterson / CNET
While Samsung and others were testing the waters, Apple learned weak pointsthem from their foldable devices and determine how they would be used.
One "such pain point: the crease . Many current roofing materials, including the mix of glass and plastic that Samsung used for the Z Fold and Z Flip, have a visible crease when unfolded to full screen. To avoid this, Apple should probably wait Corning , " Apple 's glass supplier, to create a sort of collapsible version of its screen " Ceramic Shield . The company is already working on a ben dable glass, but has not announced a launch date for it.
Cost: Foldable phones are not cheap
The prix is another major problem for these types of devices. Although Samsung a " lowered the price of its newest foldable phones, its previous model, the Fold 2, cost $ 2,000, more than double the price of other Samsung flagship phones. And, a foldable iPhone doesn't would not be cheaper. Apple's foldable must conform to current foldable and non-foldable models in order to compete with other brands and make iPhone users ditch their single-screen devices and pay more for a foldable.
A April report revealed that " half of American consumers are interested in purchasing a foldable phone , although Apple customers are a little less inclined to take the plunge thane Samsung or LG users. But maybe the " effect "Apple " change these stats if and when a foldable iPhone becomes reality.
