Louise Summers asks why custody of children is still not shared equally ( Letters , July 18). An answer could be that most governments put the responsibility of childcare on the mother. I was lucky to be on gardening leave for the first three months of my son's life. This created a wonderful father bond -son, which continued into adulthood. Fathers should be entitled to the samet parental leave and at the same salary as mothers (except for two weeks for childbirth). If fathers took up to 12 months of leave, not only would the likelihood of shared care increase, but fathers could also understand how important child care is.
