"In an excess of caution, the city has ordered the building to be closed immediately and residents evacuated for their protection, while a full structural assessment is being conducted, "North Miami Beach City Manager Arthur Sorey III said in a statement. The 10 story apartment building has approximately 160 units and is located approximately 25 miles northwest of The South Champlain Towers collapse site in Surfside, Florida, according to property records.
The Surfside collapse last Thursday left at least 22 dead and 126 missing as search efforts and rescue operations continued over a week later.
Officials said they expected to continually revise these totals and crews are digging through the rubble. No new survivors have been found for the hours immediately following the unexpected collapse.
Further rescue efforts are hampered by structural concerns about which parts of the building remain standing and the approach tohurricane Elsa, which could reach southern Florida on Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Officials said they wanted to demolish the remaining southern sections of the Champlain Towers, which Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has called a threat to public safety, but can only do so after the storm has passed.
