At the film"s press conference in Los Angeles, Collider had the opportunity to sit down with Kathryn Newton and a one-on-one chat about the Blockers call, why she enjoyed the environment director Kay Cannon created, the bonding with her co-stars, all the laughs on set , the most difficult scene to go through and his own ballroom experience. She also explained why she was so excited to be a part of the Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu , which she learned while being part of The CW series Supernatural , and be part of Big Little Lies . Collider: when you logged into this site, did you have an exact idea of what you would get on your own, especially with the physical comedy side? KATHRYN NEWTON: Sure! I was on a CBS sitcom for three years called Gary Unmarried and we filmed in front of a live audience so I was like, "Oh, I know how to ride the wave and know when something"s funny. "I"ve never made a movie like this before. The way Kay [Cannon], our director, established this environment where you could do whatever you wanted, there was no fear. I really trusted her, Leslie [Mann] and my two daughters, Geraldine [Viswanathan] and Gideon [Adlon]. They asked us to let go and steal, and we made things up. did a lot of improvisation and then they pulled lines at us that day. Things changed a lot. I never worked that way before, and now I would like to continue working that way. It was just a really fun way to do it. It kept the freshness and nWe laughed a lot. When did you realize the chemistry was there? Were you able to spend so much time together, in advance? NEWTON: By the time I met Leslie Mann, we both started to cry during my audition. We were both bawling and I was like, "This is gonna be awesome!" I love him so much. It took a while to find the two girls and I didn"t meet them. The night before the shoot we were all staying at the same hotel and I finally met Gideon and Geraldine, and it clicked. We were like, "This is going to be awesome!", And it was. We were immediately friends, and we are still friends. We talk so much. They are probably two of my closest friends. I am really lucky. I made a really fun movie and made two really good friends out of it. When you make a movie like this, is therelots of laughs and fun on set? NEWTON: Oh, my God, Geraldine made me cry, laughing. There was so much laughter and so much fun. We just sa id the craziest things. We broke a lot. Leslie made me break like crazy, and she never laughs. She didn"t break. I would cry, on the other side of the camera, and she would be right in there, so focused. It takes so much concentration not to laugh. It was outrageous!
