New York State Democratic Party chairman backed Governor Kathy Hochul, saying a multi-candidate primary in 2022 could hurt the party.
New York State Democratic Party Chairman approved the governor on Monday Kathy Hochul in the sequel to the main race of the year, arguing that a fierce multi-candidate for all could be detrimental to the party - even as several potential candidates take increasingly serious steps towards series of t heir.
Jay Jacobs, the party chairman, said the approval was his and not that of the state party. But her announcement was seen as a first effort to rally the support of Ms Hochul, who rose to the governorship after the resignation of disgraced Andrew M. Cuomo.
But Mr. Jacobs 's efforts to bring the whole party together are already meeting resistance - and he acknowledged it, as he hinted at the growing activity surrounding the race.
"From At the beginning, I have exhurged those who wish to run for governor to keep their powder, wait and allow Governor Hochul to do the job and make his mark, "Jacobs said at a press conference in Long Island. "Unfortunately, over the past few days it seems that a number of applicants are getting more and more anxious.
Indeed, last week , New York Public Attorney Jumaane D. Williams, launched an exploratory committee ; State Attorney General Letitia James said she was almost a final decision on whether to run; and other Democrats, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, US Representative Thomas Suozzi from Long Island and Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone are also reportedly interested.
"A party torn apart by multiple candidates in multiple primaries for multiple offices will deplete precious resources, we
Support from Mr. Jacobs, who is also the chairman of the Nassau County Democratic Committee, and another endorsement Monday from Rich Schaffer, the Democratic leader County of Suffolk, point to Ms Hochul's potential strength on vote-rich Long Island ahead of next year's Democratic primary.
But then even as Mr. Jacobs was speaking, the potential rival lMs. Hochul's most powerful was perhaps about 25 miles away, appearing on a stage which, stylistically if not in substance, could have been mistaken for a campaign painting.
Ms. James was in the South Bronx Monday morning, kicking off a statewide tour in which she will begin delivering the first of up to $ 1.5 billion to fight the outbreak opioids, "her office said, drawing on the settlements she negotiated. The tour is hosted by his government team, and the event was often low-key, with speakers sharing painful stories of how the opioid crisis ravaged neighborhoods across the city.
" We are not talking about politics, we are talking about lives today, "she warned a reporter who asked about Mr. Jacobs' endorsement . Nonetheless, the tour comes as Ms James and her allies have made it clear that she is considering running for governor - and so the event, which exemplified Ms. James 'connections in
It was flanked by members of the city council, members of the assembly and senators of the state, and of re presentateurs Adriano Espaillat and Jamaal Bowman.
"With an event like this, she is an effective GA, capturing all those dollars to help our communities," said said Mr. Espaillat in a brief interview after the event. "This means she would probably be an effective governor.
"We will review all applicants," he added. "I think she would make an excellent candidate, but that 's her choice.
Questions as to whether Ms. James would introduce herself and to what the rest of the field would look like prevented some county presidents from joining Mr Jacobs in making endorsements, though he suggested he expected others to indicate their support in the next few days.
"Kathy Hochul has done a great job as governor and I hope she succeeds, but I think thingsThis needs to be played out a bit more, ”said Suzanne Berger, chair of the Westchester County Democratic Committee. “The attorney general, who was also a great elected official, needs an opportunity and a space to make the best decision for herself and for the state.
Other Democrats have openly criticized Mr Jacobs 's decision to step in a primary, especially at a relatively early stage in the race - although there are few other recent points of comparison. Mr Cuomo was in office for a decade, and before that party officials asked Gov. David A. Paterson not to run for a full term after taking over from disgraced former Governor Eliot Spitzer.
Mr. Williams said in a statement that the role of Mr. Jacobs, "and that of our state 's top Democratic officials, should be to raise the candiDemocratic States, Democratic voters and Democratic values ".
Mr. Williams also noted Mr. Jacobs 'long-standing alliance with Mr. Cuomo, who released another statement on Monday gutting the independent inquiry into his conduct released by Ms James' office. The ex-governor lamented that "this is not New York at its best " There has been much speculation as to whether Mr. Cuomo - whose resignation speech doubled in defense of his legacy - would seek to invest real money in meddling in the course.
Mr. Jacobs said he gave Mr. Cuomo, among other things, a warning about the approval, a remark that attracted attention on Monday.
"I" I am not involved in this, I amI'm really not, "said Hochul, when asked about Mr. Jacobs 's decision to hire Mr. Cuomo. "I 'm proud to have the support of Jay Jacobs, Rich Schaffer and anyone who wants to line up behind me, but they know that ' s not my goal.
And when asked about Mr. Cuomo's missive, she replied: "I'm actually too busy governing New York to care about emails people write. "
