Illegal casinos are "the rule " "in Northern Ireland, two big bookmakers have claimed.
They told a Stormont committee that in some cases bingo and legal gaming premises converted into an opera houseat night.
These illegal premises have the potential to place much higher stakes, the committee heard.
Bookmaker Gary Toal said police did not believe they had resources to do anything about them.
Mr. Toal and his fellow bookmaker Paul McLlean testified before the assembly's communities committee.
Members are currently scrupling the Lotteries and Betting Disruptions Bill, which would be the first major change to gambling laws in northern ireland 40 years .
They also want betting shops to beare allowed to open on Sundays, claiming that the trade takes place anyway illegally in pubs and clubs.
Mr. McLean said "you can bet on your phone at church if you want " but not at betting shops that are licensed for gambling.
Mr. Toal said he was not interested in forcing a staff member to work on a Sunday if they didn't want to. pertissements>
