Reddit removed 6% of all content published in 2020, according to the site's annual transparency report.
Of the 3.4 billion messages posted by its users in 2020, 233 million were deleted, almost all due to spam.
Over 99% of deletions were classified as spam, the rest being a mix of offensive content - including harassment, violent speechand sexualization of minors.
The number of deleted messages increased by almost 30% year over year.
Over 131 million posts have been deleted by the platform's automated moderator, while the rest have been deleted personally by the administrators.
The automated moderator bot is used to approve posts posted to Reddit 's myriad of sm all communities - called subreddits - and it has the power to remove any image or text submission that contains words orforbidden sentences.
Over 80,000 subreddits were removed in their entirety last year, almost four times as many as in 2019.
Most of them were due to lack of community moderation, harassment issues or users trying to evade a ban by recreating an already banned subreddit.
'Long way to go '
But a campaign group criticized the relaxed standards that allow many other communities to stay active.
"Reddit has made good progress in removing some of its worst crime forums, which were full of theories conspiracy and hate, but there is still a long way to go, "warned Imran Ahmed, managing director of the Center for Countering Digital Hate.
" R eddit only acted on a fraction of the hate on his site. Some active forums on the site now spread horrific racism to thousands of members. "
And he added that hisgroup had seen groups forming around "dangerous disinformation " on the Covid pandemic and "these must be addressed urgently ".
Reddit also received 611 requests for information about its users from law enforcement officials. Reddit has granted 424 of those requests, which typically involve a court order or search warrant.
Reddit has already faced a backlash from its users about how it moderates content shared on the platform. -form, most of the work being done by its community mod of erator volunteers.
For example, the subreddit r / Ireland temporarily closed to the wee hours of the morning last year to limit racist and extremist content posted by US users during this period, while Irish moderators were less active.
