If you are looking for big physical differences between the WH-1000XM3 and the WH-1000XM4, you will be a little disappointed. The main changes are under the hood which, in our opinion, is perfect; the headphones already have a really nice aesthetic, so why mess with that?
That's not to say Sony put their hands up and left the design exactly the same: the ear pads are 10 % bigger, for example, which allows for a more comfortable fit. But it's the innards that make the difference. The XM4s have fast charging, giving you five hours of playtime from 10 minutes plugged in, and on-the-spot detection. 'ear.
Other cool new tricks include adaptive sound which has been enhanced and improved to cope with more situations and environments; the music stops when you speak, to avoid constantly having to click; and the headphones now have Bluetooth 5.0, instead of 4.2, soe which means multi-device connections are supported simultaneously.
On top of that, all the usual features are still here: support for Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, 360 Reality Audio (for a virtual surround sound experience), over 30 hours reading, etc. .
