The University of Sunderland was hit by an "extensive computer disruption " which has "all the characteristics of a cyber attack ".
Phone, website, and computer systems are down but face-to-face teaching should continue as far as possible, he said.
The university was working with the police and other agencies to find out what happened.
"We take the security of our systems very seriously and will endeavor to resolve the situation as quickly as possible " said a spokesperson.
Universities in Newcastle and Northumbria have been targeted by hackers in September last year under the name of National Cyber Security Center warned of a spike in aattacks against educational institutions.
All online conferences to operate through university systems have been canceled.
Sunderland University said that students were encouraged to come to its campuses where face-to-face teaching continued.
