In The Mandalorian season 2, the reference to Operation Cinder is significant for three main reasons.
First, it puts in context how far the Empire has fallen and how far the New Republic must go to rebuild trust. The Mandalorian Timeline means that the events of " The Believer "take place five years after Operation Cinder. Now the Empire is seen in bases and retreating refineries and operating on the fringes while the New Republic takes control. This is both a gift and a curse for the Republic, which has apparently struggled to take over after the defeat of the Empire - as the dilapidated villagers of Morak have seen.
Then, it also provides much-needed depth to Bill Burr's Migs Mayfeld. The Former Prisoner,it is revealed, served the Empire during Operation Cinder, which led to the annihilation of thousands of his units and Mayfeld completely lost faith in the Empire - as Iden l ' once did.
Finally, it continues. The Mandalorian's main mission statement: Everything about the recent, larger Star Wars history matters. Whether it's the epilogue of Ahsoka Tano in Rebels, an EA video game or even Dark Troopers , a holdover from the 1990s, there's something for every Star Wars fan imaginable. Operation Cinder, however, counts more than most - and you can even play the whole experience in Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2017.
