How Dreaming About The Future Can Lead To Change Today.
Remote mountains today from Idaho come with All the comforts of home. In Sun Valley, the grain of the Old West has given way to boutique hotels, fine dining, and the median house price of $ 875,000.
Yet for a land of plenty, there is not much to do. This very place is in the throes of a housing crisis so severe it is he suggested setting up a tent community tos teachers, first responders and service personnel as one solution. The lack of affordable housing inevitably leads to hunger when people are forced to choose between a roof over their head or food on the table.
These conditions led to increased demand for The Hunger Coalition. As a local food resource working to end hunger in Blaine County, our organization served 1 in 6 people before the pandemic and by the end of 2020, had served almost 1 in 3 people. The number of people using our services continues to hover around double what we fed before the pandemic.
While hunger and housing crises have plagued this world-class resort community for decades, the effects of the pandemic have pushed us to a breaking point. If we don't make big decisions to support the workIn all of them, everything we love in our community will be lost.
Recently, The Hunger Coalition participated in a 50-year-old vision exercise moderated by Estefania Mondragon, Executive Director of PODER " from Idaho . Together our team imagined what a healthy community will look like for a decade from now.
Predictably, we envisioned a place with fresh farm food everywhere. A place where edible gardens grow from of every inch of free land. We looked at the power of our relationships and dreamed of young and old taking care of each other and neighbors sharing meals with abandon. Well, isn't it not?
But there was more to it. When we dreamed of the future, workers had a place to live, an endit is safe to raise their children; they received medical care, child care, education and a fair wage. Hunger was something children learned from history books.
Then things got more difficult. Estefania challenged our team to name the changes we need to make today to realize this vision in fifty years. We build an action plan from these same elements.
As we write this plan, there are actions we can all take today to lead the way .
There are a million little things anyone can do in the name of progress. Go "to social media, share your own vision of 50 years old and tell all your friends how you are making a difference today . Forward.
