Following the trade ban in the US , Huawei phones were limping with a scaled-down version of Android without any crucial underlying Google apps, Google Play Store, or Google services - but the company is now set to launch a new solution in the form its HarmonyOS software .
HarmonyOS has been in development for years, first as an Internet of Things platform, and later (out of necessity) as something that can work on smartphones as well. At today's launch of Huawei Mate X2 , it has been announced that HarmonyOS will arrive on Huawei's flagship phones from April.
Having already hit smart speakers, portable devices, and other devices, it looks like HarmonyOS is almost ready to make the switch to mobile. This is not a huge surprise, as it is something that Huawei updated us on in September.
It's not quite finished, so the Huawei Mate X2 will launch with Android without Google. This will be one of the first tPhones eligible for the HarmonyOS upgrade in April, Huawei said, with the software update seemingly crazy then. e available for other Huawei flagships around the same time.
Details to follow
This is pretty much all the information we 've got from Huawei at this point - we don't know exactly which existing Huawei phones will be eligible for the update, although it is likely that recent high-end devices such as Huawei Mate 40 Pro will be eligible.
We don't know exactly how HarmonyOS will work , nor how it will differ from using Android with Huawei's own app store. Huawei has promised that the operating system change will be quick and easy for users, but hasn't provided many details yet.
What we do know is that Huawei is talking about the lightweight nature of HarmonyOS, so it shouldn't say too many many claims on your smartphone. It is intended to provide a seamless experience across a range of hardware types, so it should be able to cope with low-end devices as well as high-end devices.
We will of course keep you up to date with the latest HarmonyOS updater news as we get it from Huawei - including what that means for the software on data The Huawei P50 series of phones that we expect to see increase towards the end of March.
