The introduction of four new iPhones last night was an opportunity for Apple to revamp its entire range , to modify prices, to do a little cleaning. But did he also take advantage of the collateral effects of the pandemic to increase his prices, as some feared? We take stock.
By introducing the iPhone 13 , last night, Apple not only unveiled new products with technological developments, but also helped redefine its range of smartphones globally.
Last October, after the announcement of iPhone 12 , Apple presented seven families iPhone for 20 models, since yesterday, the range has grown to reach a threshold never crossed until now, since eight families are now in the catalog, for no less than 24 iPhone models.
We list them all, to allow you to have a clear idea of what the Cupertino giant offers, to also allow you to put a price on each model and also, and finally, to highlight certain realities not obviously obvious.
iPhone 13: prices rising, for good reason?
Let's start with the new features, and therefore a price comparison between the iPhone 12 and the “equivalent” iPhone 13s. The quotation marks are essential, because beyond the evolutions, recurring from year to year (chips, memory, battery, etc.), Apple has also changed a distinctive point of importance: the storage. A point that always pays off at Apple.
The iPhone 12 and 12 mini , which were available in 64, 128 and 256 GB, face iPhone 13 and 13 mini, which offer 128, 256 and 512 GB. Very good news on paper and in practice, since it will prevent users from running out of storage space too quickly.
Apple has maintained the attack price for these 13 and 13 mini, which are sold respectively at 909 and 809 euros. Then, if we compare the three iPhone 13 and mini, with regard to their positioning in the range, the doubling of the storage entails an additional cost compared to the equivalent iPhone 12 and 12 mini. 70 euros for the second model (256 GB), and 180 euros for the third (512 GB). More storage, therefore, it shows on the bill.
However, let's take the comparison a step further, when possible. While the iPhone 12 mini 128 GB was sold for 859 euros, the iPhone 13 mini 128 GB has a price of 809 euros, while the 256 GB model of the last mini is at 929 euros, against 979 euros for the equivalent. 12 mini last year.
In other words, yes, prices increase if we compare the three models offered in 2020 and 2021, but higher storage capacity ultimately costs less…
The fear that Apple would pass on the consequences of the pandemic and the shortage of certain components on its smartphones was therefore, it seems, unfounded.
