The Tokyo Olympics 'the opening ceremonies will begin on Friday as some competitions have already started.
This is the second time that the Games will be held in Tokyo. The first time came in 1964 with 93 countries competing. Sixteen countries were making their Olympic debut at the time with 5,151 athletes competing in 33 sports.
The postponed 2020 Games will be very different.

How to watch

The Olympics can be seen on NBC programming and the Peacock streaming service this year.
Coverage of the opening ceremonies begins at 6:55 a.m. ET and continues until 11 a.m. met. There is also special coverage during the prime time ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Olympics officially open on July 23, although some competitions have already started. The Games are scheduled to end on August 9.

Basketball star Sue Bird and speed skater turned professional baseball player Eddy Alvarez will wear the American flag during the ceremony. Bird is a decorated Olympian and WNBA champion while Alvarez hopes to become the third American athlete to win a medal at the Winter and Summer Games.

How many nations are competing?
There approximately 205 countries will compete in the Olympics this year with over 11,200 athletes attending.

There are six new sports kicking off at the Olympics this year: 3-on-3 basketball, BMX freestyle, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. Click here for a preview of each new event.
Tokyo officials have pledged to hold the Olympics safe despite the continuing threat of coronavirus. There will be no fans present - foreigners or national. Only athletes, national team members, sponsors and members of the media are allowed to attend the Games this year.
Some athletes have already tested positive for the coronavirus and have had to stay at home. Guinea has decided to withdraw from the Games due to coronavirus fears.

In the absence of supporters, Olympic officials have put in place rules to try to contain the virus. Athletes will not be able to shake hands. They will also have to put their own medals around their necks.

The International Committee Olympic relaxed someaspects of its protest guidelines. Athletes are not allowed to protest during competitions and are not allowed to protest on the medal stands. Any kind of political statement should be presented just before events or during a discussion with the media.
