There is something about the term "deep state " that sounds paranoid, even bonkers. Just a few years ago, you surHeard the phrase of the relics of the far left, the kind of people who lecture you about the United Fruit Company and the overthrow of Mosaddegh. The term, yesterday and today, suggests that our democracy is bogus. Elections and domestic politics are a secondary spectacle. It doesn't matter who you vote for, at the end of the day the same people still run everything. This is a pretty bleak understanding of the American system. If you are a normal person who grew up here, this is the last thing you want to believe about your country. It sounds crazy. And then you read stories like this:
According to information released this summer, in the days following the elections last November, Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , held a meeting with senior military officials at the Pentagon . Milley wanted to inform them of what he described as a serious threat to national security - a threat so serious that it endangered "the stability of the Republic". This threat, Milley said, was the current President of the United States. Donald Trump had dared to deliver in question the result of the elections it is. For this, Milley explained, the US military might be forced to use physical force against the president. “We're the guys with the guns,” Milley said. He had apparently prepared himself for this moment. Milley had similar conversations with the director of the CIA , Gina Haspel, as well as with NSA chief Paul Nakasone. He had also spoken directly to Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi , Trump's main political rivals.
TRUMP RESPONDS TO GEN. MILEY CONTACTED THE CHINESE BEHIND HIS BACK
Now, according to a new book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Milley has gone even further than that. On October 30 last year, Woodward and Costa report, Milley called up his counterpart in China, a general called Li Zuocheng. Milley did not notify her boss, the President, of the call, neither before nor after he did. Here is Milley's message for the Communist Army Chinese . "General Li, I want to assure you that the US government ist stable and everything will be fine. We are not going to attack you or conduct kinetic operations against you. "And then, apparently, Milley said this. " General Li, you and I have known each other for five years. If we are going to attack, I will call you ahead. It won't be a surprise. "
Let yourself be understood. " If we're going to attack, I'll call you ahead. This is "It will not come as a surprise. " According to this account, our country's top defense official has secretly teamed up with our main military rival to undermine the President-elect of the United States. How do you describe it? not strong enough. It is a betrayal. It's a crime. And apparently, Mark Milley isn't the only person involved. Others knew this was happening. Our intelligence agencies almost certainly heard Mark Milley's call. If they can read e-mails from a cable news program on Fox, what are the chances that they will know?Did the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff talk to a high Chinese general and what were they saying? About 100%. Yet the NSA did nothing. The CIA clearly agreed. "We are on the way to a coup on the right ", Gina Haspel told Milley.
Actually, there was a "coup " going on, but it wasn't from the right. It wasn't preparing in Alabama. Instead, a constellation of unelected government workers es, loyal above all to the Democratic Party and the standing class in Washington, ignored the Constitution of the United States and invalidated the votes of tens of millions of American citizens. How did they do that? They invalidated democracy. Democracy means nothing if the people you elect have no power. And Mark Milley did his best to make sure the president-elect had no power. In early January, Woodward and Costa report, Milley consummoned another meeting of senior officials at the National Military Command Center. He informed the group that they reported to him, not to the President-elect of the United States. It wasn 't a small complaint. The National Military Command Center, among other things, controls nuclear weapons inside the country's missile silos and aboard its nuclear submarines. Mark Milley took personal control of America's nuclear arsenal. He walked around the room and asked his officers to submit to his authority, not the president. Milley told them not to follow any order without consulting it first. According to Woodward and Costa, they were all in agreement. Civilian control of the army was over. Mark Milley was in charge.
LT WITHDRAWN. COLLAR. ALEXANDER VINDMAN SAYS GEN. MILEY 'MUST RESIGN ' IF HER SECRET CALL WITH CHINA ISPRODUCT
If this is true, it is one of the scariest things that has happened in this country. To those who say they fear authoritarianism is coming to America, well, here it is. It is what it is. Authoritarian government. Government by unelected and irresponsible leaders, ready to resort to violence to preserve their regime. This is what this book describes.
This is shocking. Unsurprisingly, our news media spent the day celebrating it. It turns out that self-proclaimed defenders of democracy don't really believe in the system they claim to worship. The idea of giving voters power over government repels them. They are relieved to discover that in fact our democracy is bogus. Here is a selection from today's lineup:
RICK STENGEL, MSNBC: I would call General Milley a hero, he behaved in a heroic manner.
LT GEN MARK HERTLING, CNN: But what he (Milley) did was make sure the guardrails were in place, so I'm giving him high marks for that based on what's described in the book.
GEORGE WILL, CNN: I think Milley felt misused by the episode on Lafayette Square when it was used as an accessory. // So we can understand Milley's anxieties.
FMR. GEN BARRY MCCAFFREY, MSNBC: We were in a time of extraordinary danger. I think Milley will be treated favorably by history.
The first comments were from Rick Stengle, he's a jerk, obviously. There, no surprise. The second guy was a retired military man. But the last two, George Will? Barry McCaffrey? These are people, whatever you think of them, who they vote for, you thought they could stand up for American democracy at the end of the day. But they didn't. They applauded his end. Theywere happy to see Mark Milley secretly conspiring with the Chinese military to end civilian control of our Pentagon . This is the government they want. Don't forget it.
Now that you know, what happens next? Doug MacGregor is in some ways central to this story. He is a retired military colonel who last year advised the Trump administration on foreign policy. In this capacity, he co-wrote a memo calling on US troops to leave Afghanistan after 20 years. According to Woodward and Costa, this memo is one of the reasons Mark Milley decided to stage a coup.
