The PS5 controller embeds the microphones used for voice chat
When Sony revealed the presence a function to analyze conversations on voice chat during the game, an outcry has taken place against widespread listening, both on PlayStation 4 with the mandatory 8.0 update only on the PS5. The Japanese manufacturer has just given an update today on this functionality and the prevailing misunderstanding.
Moderation that protects privacy?
Sony has been somewhat clumsy in announcing its solutions to stem the verbal violence, threats and insults that pollute some online games. In someIn these cases, these harassments had disastrous consequences for certain players. The manufacturer therefore decided to set up a moderation system on voice chat.
However, some players quickly made the shortcut between moderation and real-time analysis of conversations. Remembering Amazon and others whose voice assistants tended to repeat to whoever wanted them hearing private conversations , it was indeed to be feared that Sony would listen to all conversations and analyze their full content. However, this is not the system that is set up in the so imposing PlayStation 5 .
Indeed, Sony has just given new details on the operation of its solution. If the console records well the conversations of the chat, it is only a loop of the last 5 minutes which is stored. When an abuse is noted, the victim player (or witness?) can then search for the passage in question in these last 5 minutes to send it to the moderators. They will then receive the 40 seconds selected as well as 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after in order to understand the context of the sentence. In the event of abuse observed, the player may be sanctioned.
