September 14 (Hfrance.fr) - Burundian Francine Niyonsaba closed her season by breaking the 2,000-meter world record on Tuesday, finishing with a time of 5 minutes and 21.56 seconds in a Continental Tour event in Zagreb.
The 28-year-old, who won the Diamond League 5000 meters in Zurich last week, shaved nearly four seconds off the record in exterior and moree two indoor.
The previous indoor record was set by Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba in 2017, while Irishman Sonia O 'Sullivan had held the outdoor record since 1994.
Niyonsaba, 800-meter silver medalist at the 2016 Olympics, is banned from her distance preferred due to naturally high testosterone levels.
