THE ABSOLUTE BASES
* There are two distinct categories of events, contested over a course of 2000 m: the scull and the sweeping.
* Sculling involves the use of two oars per person, with competitors rowing solo or in teams of two or four.
* Sweep teams of two, four and eight competitors each with an oar.
HOW MUCH FOR MEDALS?
There are 14 gold medals up for grabs, including eight pairs events and six sweeps.
WHAT HAPPENED IN RIO?
La Granof Britain dominated the medal table for the third consecutive Olympics, while the New Zealand veterans also shone, with Mahe Drysdale winning his second gold in the men 's single scull and Eric Murray a nd Hamish Bond retaining their 2012 title in the coxless duo.
The United States captured a third straight gold in the women's eight.

With the retirement of Drysdale, a battle is brewing for the top step of the podium in the men's single sculls, as concerns over water quality and conditions weigh on the Olympic venue.
