Major social networking sites have adopted blue check marks to indicate authenticity, and now the music streaming service SoundCloud enters the verification game.
SoundCloud a added blue check marks to Validated Creators in Search and Profiles. Billie Eilish , Wiz Khalifa and Trippie Redd , who have been with SoundCloud since the start of their careers, were among the first to be verified.
So how does someone get that blue check mark next to their name? First of all, they must ensure that their account meets the following criteria:
- Must represent an artist, collective, DJ, label, curator or podcast
- Must be a unique profile: no fan account or impersonator
- No misleading information and abides by Soun's Terms of ServicedCloud
- A biography, profile photo and at least one track must be uploaded.
Artists who believe they are eligible can navigate to the Settings tab of SoundCloud.com and click “Request Verification”. The team can take up to 30 days to decide on their verification status.
SoundCloud Pro Unlimited subscribers will be the first to have their verification apps reviewed. Pro subscribers already have orange Pro star badges on their profiles, which was often mistaken for a verification. SoundCloud says the new blue verification checkmark will make it easier to visually distinguish between the two.
Verification has long been synonymous with Twitter, which kept its approval process rather quiet for years until opening things up a bit in 2016 , with results mixed . Other services, including Facebook and Instagram, have since followed suit. Interesting factnt, Twitter explored a SoundCloud acquisition in 2014, but opted to invest $ 70 million instead , which didn't really work out .
Meanwhile, SoundCloud rival Bandcamp this week launched ticketed and live-streamed events this week, but in the form Engadget points out, Bandcamp Live is a little late to the party there. In March, SoundCloud partnered with Twitch to license SoundCloud Pro, SoundCloud Premier, and Repost from the makers of SoundCloud to make money from their Twitch streams.
