Chances are, you hate your internet provider, even if your connection is fast.of. Now imagine that your provider can barely offer you reasonable speed for your distance learning kids, your partner forced to work from home, or yourself for lessons, video meetings and streaming The Expanse.
This is the state of the internet for far too many people, especially in rural areas, and the only reasonable solution on the horizon is the promise of really fast connections via satellite. This happens, thanks to the eventual Kuiper project from Amazon (allegedly with speed up to 400 Mbps ) and Star of SpaceX.
Star buzz is strong enough that Reviews.org conducted a survey of 500 people over 18 years olds to ask them if they would consider going on board. Despite the cost ($ 499 for an antenna and router, plus $ 99 per month), more than half of those surveyed said they were ready to sign up for the beta, and 55% of those who did don't use satellite now would stick to Star all the time if the connection speed was faster, even if it was more expensive than what they currently have. Forty-four percent of all respondents would stay loyal to Star if they could make payments on equipment rather than paying the $ 499 upfront.
The top decision factors more important to survey participants? Streaming (74%), video calling (72%), and online gaming (56%).
The average monthly internet price in the US is $ 65, so Star is more expensive in that sense . But broken down by price per Mbps, Star is cheaper: $ 0.96 per Mbps (currently averaging 104 Mbps overdownloads) vs. $ 1.13 per Mbps for the competition, on average.
FYI, Star's speed overshadows its satellite ISPs significantly and also drastically reduces latency . This means that the quality of the connection will be much closer to what you get with the cable (but not as good as fiber optic to the home). Star's current latency averages 39 milliseconds. In a previous PCMag report on speeds observed in actual use of Star tests on Ookla 's Speedtest (which is owned by the parent company of PCMag Ziff Davis), we found the download speedt average was already increasing, from 33.3 Mbps on average last summer to 79.5 Mbps in October 2020. This is more than three times the best download speed you have ever seen from the Internet competitor by nearest existing satellite, Viasat. And don't even tell me about Viasat's latency.
If you have the right equipment, Star even goes work in the car .
