C is partlya kidnapping thriller, part a thriller, part an intense portrayal of a derailed marriage - and quite one of the best TV shows of the past decade. Jenna Coleman and Ewen Leslie (both performing exceptionally well) take on the roles of parents facing the sudden loss of their baby boy, who disappears from the car one evening while at the supermarket.
The Cry is cut so strikingly - in an intensely fragmented style by editor Alistair Reid - that the visual grammar of the series takes your breath away. Based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald, co-adapted by the author herself, and directed by Glendyn Ivin ( Safe Harbor , Seven types of ambiguity , Penguin Bloom ), the series crushes the drama into a very intense tangle ; then, with magical dexterity, gradually unveils the surprises, leading to an electrifying finale.
TV, Australia, 2012-2015 - now available
Film and television Australians present several well-known detectives and investigators ( Irish Jack , Jane Halifax , Jay Swan ...) but none look like Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) smart, sassy and incrediblydressed. I respect his lifestyle decisions; if you're fully charged and have all the time in the world, why not dig through the police stuff and solve some horrible crimes?
Every episode of the TV show (which spawned a medium feature film and two derivative series, one fact here and the other from China ) begins with someone stroking him under suspicious or explicitly nefarious circumstances. Fisher then rushes to save the day, in the Jessica Fletcher stick modelybeaks. The show becomes more and more captivating as it progresses, with the production team refining what becomes an irresistibly more greedy formula.

Co-created by Selma director Ava DuVernay and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, this six-part series features the athlete's high school years in California. More interesting than his sports career is his political activism ; Kaepernick made headlines around the world for kneeling down to protest police brutality, which resulted in him being ousted from the league.

The deceased participant in the detention is Simon (Mark McKenna). All these years later Stanley 's dangerous energy Kubrick ' s notorious masterpiece hasn 't diminished one iota. This difficult but impeccably crafted film is captivating from its foreground, depicting those horrific Droogs drinking glasses of milk, with Malcolm McDowell's narration of getting ready for "a bit of old ultra violence".
A confrontational stretch of 'I can't watch, I can't look away' has to be endured before the film finally comes to an intellectual perspective, when the powers that be attempting to use experimental treatment to reform violent criminals. This leads to the question of whether kindness can beced or taught, or whether it has to come from within. Another question asked by Kubrick: "Can I use devices to keep McDowell's eyes open and look super weird and film him for visual effect?" The answer, of course, is yes.

New Gold Mountain

Last year when I asked Warwick Thornton for this reflection on the word " cine "matic", the response of the great director understood the succinct definition: "Damn, that looks good!" This Thornton turn of phrase will be in mind when you watch director Corrie Chen's four-part miniseries set in the Victorian gold fields of the 1850s - told from the perspective of Chinese miners - because , well, damn it looks good.
Expect some stunning pictorial visuals (including the old image "fully clothed woman in disguise walks in. a plane of water ", which never ceases to be dramatic) a da tale involving a mysterious murder and tensions between rival gangs.

At this point in human history , a new documentary proclaiming that Australian democracy is not under threat of being bought and traded by the highest bidders would be far more shocking than one that claims it is. The position of this survey led by Craig Reucassel, presented by sympathetic Christiaan Van Vuuren, is of course the opposite, exploring the influence of lobbyists and explaining pourquoi (citing press documents) "we should care about this, and how we can protect our democracy.

Succession season three
TV, USA, 2021 - released October 18
Realism is comes in many forms and can be reached in many ways. Like this article reported, the creators of Succession brought in heritage consultants "who advised actors to behave like filthy rich - with suggestions such as not to be.quiver when they get out of a helicopter (after all, they have been in and out of it all their lives) or wearing coats because they are going straight from the mansion to get into a limo.
This is a small example of how and why HBO's hit series about a very wealthy family, with kids jostling each other and a mogul father media (* cough * Murdoch * cough *) captivated audiences. Stories about dynasties will never go out of fashion, and after a very climactic season two finale, it looks like Succession still has plenty of gas in the tank.

He's ba-ack! Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm now has 11 seasons and debuted in 2000. So happy 21st birthday, Larry! May you mark the occasion by neurotically contemplating small dseemingly unimportant stacks, baking them over and over, popping them all out of proportion; then, when things get (even more) pear shaped, whip up a weird take on how you were right from the start. Not for everyone, but extremely good.

The Green Knight
Film, USA, 2021 - released October 28
Director David Lowery 's highly anticipated medieval epic has generated a lot of buzz, including not a but two five star reviews posted on that same banner.Dev Patel embarks on a lavishly shot mission involving a duel with the main character (Ralph Ineson), which involves a catch: the person who succeeds in beheading the Green Knight wins his ax but is destined to suffer the same fate. precisely one year later.
Expect mountains and misty forests, Arthurian largesse and splashes of cinematic surrealism. Lowery's previous fantastic film, A Ghost Story, was an incredible astral projection beyond the boundaries of time and space and back again - courtesy of a dude wearing a sheet. He didn't receive a , not two , but three four-star reviews posted on this same title.
Young promising woman
Film, USA, 2020 - release October 7
Writer / Director Emerald Post- # MeToo Fennell's Rape Revenge movie hits you for six years, led by an unforgettable performance by Carey Mulligan as a woman who hangs out in bars, pretends to be drunk, and then does afraid of men who try to take advantage of her. The film is fiercely and powerfully controversial, revamping a genre that more often than not involves middle-aged men like Liam Neeson avenging their daughters.

Muppets Haunted Mansion
TV, USA, 2021 - released October 8
The time has come for a new Muppets film; now is always a good time for a new Muppets movie. These foam and felt scallywags have taken an inimitable place in popular culture and evolve and punctuate over time; we never exceed them. Muppetational's latest inspiring adventure follows Gonzo and Pepe the Royal Shrimp as they spend an evening in a haunted mansion.
Fun fact: I once thought to myself I was smuggled into a test screening for a Muppets film (people from the press were banned) and on the audience bulletin I wrote that Pepe's performance wast “undercooked”. Since then, I feel bad about this, first for having committed a terrible crime against comedy and then for having insulted Pepe.
Mentions Honorable: Black Widow (movie, October 6), Hot Tub Time Machine (movie, October 15), Bad Times at the El Royale (movie, October 22).

Great comedian Steve Coogan has flexed his dramatic muscles - including in a upcoming performance as as notorious pedophile Jimmy Saville, and in this mini-series about the fight to convict the murderers of the titular black British teenager who was killed in a racially motivated attack in 1993.
Coogan pla ys Chief Detective Inspector Clive Driscoll, who is leading a reopened investigation into the case, believing that he is 'this is "a simple crime that I think we should be able to solve with a little brassy meaning". Released under the title Stephen in the UK, the show has been described as" steadfast TV "told in a" hand truth "style.
