LONDON, October 6 (Hfrance.fr) - British online grocer Ocado (OCDO.L) invests 10 million pounds (13.6 milliondollars) in autonomous driving technology start-up Wayve and a partnership to develop autonomous grocery deliveries capable of handling traffic on busy city streets.
Wayve's technology will be used in a 12-month stand-alone delivery trial using a number of Ocado delivery vans in bustling London routes, with a human driver overseeing the tests, the two companies on Wednesday.
"It 'sa recognition that we are uniquely positioned to build a technology capable of providing the delivery space of the last mile as well as adapt and expand globally, "said Alex Kendall, CEO of London-based Wayve.
Ocado 's investment brings total Wayve funding raised to date to $ 60 million.
"We have been impressed with Wayve 's approach to solving this most complex challenge and are delighted to accelerate our capabilities so that our business partners in the the whole world can take advantage at the earliest opportunity, "said Alex Harvey, Chief Technology Officer of Ocado, in a statement.
Part of Ocado's delivery fleet will also be fitted with data collection devices to understand and learn how human drivers handle traffic so that Wayve can train its own system to deal with the complexities of on-road driving.
Wayve CEO Kendall said the company 's technology is based on machine learning which uses camera sensors installed at exterior of the vehicle.
The startup will also start a truck testAutonomous delivery operations with UK supermarket chain Asda in London in early 2022.
Earlier this year Ocado will invest £ 10million in the company oxbotica-based autonomous vehicle software package in a partnership that aims to reduce the cost of last mile delivery and other logistics. learn more
This partnership will initially focus on Ocado 's UK operations and then expand to international clients such as the chain of 'Kroger American Grocery (KR.N ) .
