The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution has granted Space X's Star satellite network Internet service uses the 10.7-12.75 GHz and 14-14.5 GHz frequency bands.

L ' abandonment by Google of the project Loon aimed at providing connectivity IInternet in remote areas via balloons has not quenched the eagerness of other American giants to mesh space. In the race for satellite Internet coverage, Blue Origin - founded by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos who will be stepping down in the coming months - and Space X launched by Elon Musk, not to mention Facebook, clash. Space X does however benefit from a key advantage in launching its Star service in France, with the granting by Arcep of an authorization to use frequencies to provide Internet access by satellite.
“Star Internet Services Limited is authorized to use, throughout the territory to which Arcep is assigned, radio frequencies in the 10.95-12.70 GHz bands (space-to-Earth direction) and 14-14.5 GHz (Earth-to-space direction) in order to provide high-speed Internet access services.ebit ", indicated the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution in a decision published on February 18, 2021. The allocation period for these frequencies runs over 10 years from February 9, 2021.

"This authorization is granted without guarantee of non-interference and the company Star Internet Services Limited is subject to an obligation of non-interference with respect to other users of the frequency bands mentioned in article 1. The company Star Internet Services Limited must immediately stop all activity related to the use of these frequencies if interference is observed ", also specified Arcep.
The satellite Internet coverage projects do not date from yesterday. While Amazon is working on the subject ofthen twenty years old and plans a commercial launch of its satellite Internet network in 2029, Space X still has few years of experience behind it - its creation dating back 6 years . But the company seems to be reaching its goal with the launch of a beta service at the end of 2020. The company had thus announced a connection speed of between 50 and 150 Mb / s and a latency of 50-40ms, while specifying that short periods of loss of connectivity should be expected. As for the prices, they amount for the beta service to 99 dollars before tax per month for the access to the service, coupled with 499 dollars HT of equipment (antenna and router) and installation.
