"L 'America is shaped by our common history, much of it is painful and etched with appalling injustice, "Newsom wrote in his signature message . "Students deserve to see themselves in their studies, and they must understand the entire history of our nation if we are to expect them to ever build a more just society.
What exactly is the new law?
Assembly Bill 101 adds one semester of ethnic studies to the state high school graduation requirements.
This will introduce high school students to concepts that have generally been reserved at the college level.
Not only ethnic studies born on a Bay Area college campus , but that's also already a required degree at California Community Colleges, California State University system and some University of California Campus .
Details of what will be taught in high schools depend on local districts.
La quasi- 900-page curriculum template approved by the California Department of Education this year includes dozens of sample lessons, such as "# B lackLivesMatter and Social Change ”,“ Chinese Railroad Workers ”and“ US Housing Inequalities: Redlining and Racial Housing Covenants. "
Who does this affect?
The first high school students subject to the new mandate sont those who graduate from 2029-30 year university. Schools should not begin offering ethnic studies classes until 2025.
This requirement applies to students at all public schools in California , including charter schools. There are currently approximately 1.7 million public high school students in the state. Is anyone else doing this?
Several districts in California have already added an ies ethnic stud to their high school graduation requirements, including San Diego , San Francisco , Fresno and Los Angeles Unified School Districts.
In 2017, Oregon passed an ordinance of the law ing that the Ethnic studies concepts be incorporated into existing social studies courses for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12. The rule differs from California in that it does not create a separate course focused on ethnic studies.
Who opposes to the law?
California has been working for years on developing a model ethnic studies curriculum, but early versions were strongly rejected from several sides . Amid these concerns, Newsom last year vetoed a version almost identical of the bill.
Previous versions of the state education guide have been criticized as being too left, filled with jargon and promoting Critical Race Theory ", an academic concept that argues that racism is rooted in US laws and government institutions.
There was also the condemnation of Jewish groups, who felt that the program emphasized Palestinian oppression while barely mentioning the Holocaust ,as well as other ethnic groups who felt excluded.
The final version of the state curriculum, approved in March , removed references that offended Jewish groups when adding lessons on the experiences of Jews, Arabs and Sikhs in America, Los Angeles Times Reports . He also hit on terms like "cisheteropatriarchate" and "hxrstory", as well as the language linking capitalism to oppression.
Yet critics remain. Some supporters of the original guidelines believe that the scope should not have been extended beyond the four groups.people who lived in America before the arrival of Europeans.
Others also find the current version. radical again. Williamson M. Evers, former deputy secretary of the US Department of Education, told the Los Angeles Times that the model curriculum was "p soaked" in content that made it "racially divisible and overwhelmed by a fashionable ideology ". the debate will undoubtedly continue.
