Tips to know when using Clubhouse, the social voice network.

Created in March 2020 by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, Clubhouse is a vocal social network that is used by more than 10 million iOS users worldwide, and currently accessible by invitation only. The Francophone community has grown steadily over the past few weeks. It would be estimated at around 50,000 users, pending its deployment to Android smartphone owners. Discover all the tips for using Clubhouse well.
1. Joining a room on Clubhouse
On the home page of the app, a series of active rooms are offered depending on the people and clubs you follow. By scrolling down, tap on the Explore icon to view more. Just tap on one to access it. You will be part of the audience of the room, that is to say in the part located at the bottom "Others in the room". You will be present in the "Followed by the speakers" assistance if one of the room moderators follows you. Currently, the maximum room capacity is 8,000 participants, a figure that is constantly changing.
2. Consult the calendar of the next rooms to follow on Clubhouse
You can access the calendar of rooms programmed on Clubhouse by pressing the calendar icon at the topof the screen. You access the list of scheduled rooms, those that are in progress and those that will take place in the next few minutes or hours. Tap on the down directional arrow, next to the menu at the top of the screen: “Upcoming for you” rooms are displayed by default, these are those based on people, subjects or even clubs that you follow. Choose "All upcoming", you will get a wider choice of rooms programmed on Clubhouse.
Note that the comma located next to the bell icon, in this tab, means that the room is also indicated in your notifications (Activity), because you are following one of the moderators who created it.
3. Quickly create a room on Clubhouse
To start a room instantly, simply press the green button at the bottom of the home page: "Start a room". A window is displayed at the bottom of the screen with the following choice:
- "Open": a room open to all Clubhouse users,
- "Social" : a room reserved for your subscribers,
- "Closed": a closed room (padlock icon displayed next to it), accessible only to the users you wish to invite,
- Linked to a club: a room dedicated to members of a club to which you belong.
The trick: if you are not comfortable speaking in front of hundreds of people, start by creating a closed room. Firstly, chat with your contacts, then, when you feel ready, open your room to other users. From a closed room, you can also take the intermediate step by inviting only people you follow. The creator of a room, whether it is open oru closed, is automatically designated as moderator. This status can be recognized by the green star to the left of the first name, under the profile photo. Note also that a moderator retains his status, even if he has to temporarily leave the room before returning to it.
The moderator (s) of a room on Clubhouse have an essential role. They are responsible for moderating and therefore regulating speech, so that discussions around a subject remain the same. more courteous and audible as possible. Thus, a moderator has access to different functionalities:
- Invite members of the audience of a room to go on the stage, and therefore to become a speaker,
- Cut the speaker microphone to avoid cacophony,
- Block the "mso lift ”if he considers that the number of speakers reached is too high,
- Bring speakers down into the audience,
- Eject a participant (troll) from the room.
When a moderator decides not to bring a participant on stage, a message is displayed in red at the top of the screen to notify the assistance.
4. Programming a room on Clubhouse
To program a room, go to the calendar tab and tap on the calendar icon accompanied by a "+" at the top right of the screen. Then all you have to do is fill in the indicated fields:
- Add a title to your room,
- Select a "co-host", who will obtain the role of moderator with you for co-host the room, you can also designate a guest (to be specified in the title and deion),
- Enter the date and time of the start of the room,
- Specify if your room is part of a club that you follow ("host club"), it will not then be accessible.sible only to members of this club,
- End with a deion (200 characters maximum), as precise as possible, of your room to encourage other Clubhouse users to join you and participate in your room ,
- Press the "Publish" button, your room will then appear in the calendar tab.
Advice: be sure to fill in the title and deion more precisely possible, in order to avoid any bad buzz. For example, a question-and-answer session with a guest that was not advertised as such could cause disappointment and generate frustration for your listeners, who were expecting another format. Certain "counter-rooms" can thus be created on the sidelines or following a room, in reaction to its organization or to the management of its moderation. Note that once a room is open to all users, it is no longer possible to modify its subject.
5. Invite participants from a room to become speaker or moderator on Clubhouse
To bring participants from the audience onto the stage, so that those -Here can intervene in the discussion, a moderator can either respond favorably to a request for a "show of hands" or invite one or more people present in the room.To do this, click on the profile picture of the person you wish to invite. A menu is displayed with several options: you can then invite the participant to become a speaker (and thus go on stage) and even grant him the status of moderator. To lower the speaker back into the audience, perform the same action and choose the "Move to audience" button.
To block the number of hands raised, tap on the "raised hands" icon on the leftthe "+" button and select "off".
6. Raising Your Hand: Speaking Out at Clubhouse
If you are not the creator of a room, you must be invited by one of the moderators on the stage. Your profile picture and your first name will appear all dedicated to the room, right next to the moderators. To do this, tap on the freehand icon located at the bottom right of the app. When the moderator has accepted your request, a notification will appear at the top of the screen and you will have the option to confirm the request or refuse it, if you have changed your mind in the meantime.
The advice: remember to cut your microphone when you go on stage - your microphone being by default open and inactive when you are in the audience -, so as not tointerfere with the discussion in progress, and be sure to wait your turn before speaking. In most cases, the moderator will mention your name to invite you to speak. You also have the possibility to react (to "bounce back", the popular term on the app) to the exchanges, while remaining respectful towards the other participants.
7. Step off the Stage in a Clubhouse Room
When you are on the Stage in a Clubhouse room and have spoken, you may feel like stepping down into the audience. To do this, just click on their profile picture and then hit the "Move to audience" button.
8. Flashing your microphone in a room on the Clubhouse
When the speakers, whether moderators and / or audience members invited on stage, start flashing their microphone, this means that they applaud as an approval guide to what has just been said by one of the intenewcomers. When you have been invited to take the stage, the raised hand icon changes to the microphone. To make it flash, just press it repeatedly, without speaking.
9. Leave a Clubhouse room neither seen nor known
Press the "Leave quietly" button written in red, located at the bottom of the 'screen, when you are in a room to leave it without being noticed.
10. Chat privately on Clubhouse
To open a closed room, that is to say limited to the contacts of your choice, you have two possibilities:
- Tap on the "Start a room" button on the home page and select "Closed", then confirm by pressing "Let's go ”,
- Swipe your screen from right to left to view online contactson the app and available to chat with them. Tap on the green button "+ Room" followed by a padlock to start a private chat with the chosen contact.
The private room is displayed with a padlock on your home page and that of the person you are chatting with privately.
11. Fill in your biography efficiently on Clubhouse
To optimize your visibility on the Clubhouse voice social network, it is recommended that you fill in your biography. Unlike other apps like Twitter , you can integrate a text long enough to introduce yourself, indicate your professional activity, your background, your centers of interest, but also the rooms that you have programmed in the days to come, which allows your potential followers to betteridentify and follow you.
The trick: include keywords but also emojis in your biography, because these elements, like your name and your username, make it easier to find you via the Explore tab, magnifying glass at the top left of the screen. For example, if you add a ghost-shaped emoji in your text, your profile will appear among the list of suggested accounts from that query on the Explore tab. Remember to include your Twitter and / or Instagram accounts. Clubhouse being a social network only based on audio, it is not possible to exchange in DM (writings).
Some users add the mention of their company or organization directly within their profile picture, whathelps to strengthen their visibility.
12. Changing your name or username on Clubhouse
If you want to change your name or username on Clubhouse, go to your profile. In the first case, tap on your name and select "Correct my legal name" to modify your first and last name. You also have the possibility to add a nickname, by choosing the option "Add my creator alias ". In the second case, press your username and type the one that suits you best. Clubhouse specifies that these changes are only possible once. So be sure to choose the name or username you want Also note that, in the rooms, it is your first name or this nickname that appears under your profile picture, as moderator, speaker or simple listener.
Clubhouse invitations being accessible only with the user's phone number, the app does not however allow you to modify it .
13. Remove the "party hat" emoji from your profile on Clubhouse
The "party hat" icon in the shape of a party hat indicates that you have just joined the party. Clubhouse application. If it is not possible to remove it manually, it automatically disappears after 7 days of using the platform. If this icon may disturb some users, it nevertheless allows other members to be informed, especially room moderators, whom you may not yet be aware of all the codes in force on the platform.They will then be more lenient with you if, for exampleFor example, you forget to mute your microphone when you go on stage or speak without being invited.
14. Tracing your "nomination tree" on Clubhouse
Among the tips offered by Clubhouse, know that it is possible to trace your "nomination tree", on the model of a family tree but dedicated to the journey of the different invitations that led to your arrival on the application. To do this, go to your profile. At the bottom of the screen, you will find the date you joined Clubhouse and who you invited. Tap on their name, then on the name of the person who invited them, and so on. Beyond the fun trick, it allows you to discover other Clubhouse user profiles and open up your network even more.
15. Finding new people to follow on Clubhouse
When accessing a Clubhouse user's bio, tap the iconin the form of stars located to the right of the "Follow" or "Following" button depending on whether or not you are following this contact. Once the button is activated, a banner will appear between the number of followers / follwing and his bio with a long list of suggested people to follow, from that contact. Good to know: this feature is also available in rooms, when you tap on the profile picture of a participant, speaker or moderator.
You can also find other people to follow through the Explore tab. A first list of personalities is proposed, which you can expand by pressing the “Show more people” button. Below, you access a list of topics of conversation: Tech, sports,
For each of the proposed themes, Clubhouse provides you with a list of new contacts, areas of interest related to the subject and clubs that you can join.
16. Invite contacts to join a room on Clubhouse
By pressing the “+” button at the bottom of the screen when you you are in a room, a window is displayed with access to "ping". You can therefore invite your contacts to join you in a room, whose subject might also be of interest to them. Only users who follow you can be invited via this feature. A notification is then sent to them and they can either accept or refuse to enter the room.
17. Invite other users to join Clubhouse
When you receive the precious sesame that gives you access to Clubhouse, you get two invitations to distribute to two contacts of your choice. Only one criterion is mandatory: have an iPhone, the app is not yet available to owners of Android smartphones. If you are a minimum active on Clubhouse (ask to go on stage, speak, follow users and be followed, join clubs ...), you will regularly receive 3 additional invitations to distribute among your contacts.
Note that the platform is opening up more and more: suggestions are sometimes pushed by the app to suggest that you accept to bring in new subscribers, who were previously on the waiting list, without having to use their quoyour invitations. Your number of invitations can be found by tapping on the envelope-shaped icon surmounted by a star. Please note that in the event of inappropriate behavior on the platform, the person who initiated the invitation may also be banned from Clubhouse.
18. Join a club on Clubhouse
A club on Clubhouse brings together a group of users around the same theme. To find new clubs, you can use the Explore tab or consult the clubs of your followers and people you already follow. Tap on the "Following" button on the profile of the club you wish to join. The club administrator will need to accept your request first. In this case, the club logo will appear at the bottom of your biography, under the words "Member of". By following clubs in your areas of interest, you will receive notifications when a new room, organized by one of the club members, is scheduled or in progress. As a reminder, these rooms are only accessible to club members.
Note that you can also create a room in the name of a club. It is advisable to follow the recommendations indicated in the presentation text of the club and, in some cases, follow a "training", by participating in rooms where the administrators of the clubs will explain their guidelines to you for creating a room in the name of the club. that you have just joined.
19. Create a club on Clubhouse
To create a new club on Clubhouse, go to on this page . You will have to fill in a series of information:
- The name of the club,
- Its category (well-being, arts, sports,
- Sa deion,
- The full name of the creator or primary administrator,
- The usernameof the creator or of the main administrator,
- The title of the (public) rooms that will be regularly created in the name of the club,
- The day and time of this meeting you,
- Your e-mail address,
- And a field dedicated to comments or questions.
Good to know: each user can create up to 'to a maximum of 2 clubs to limit their number, already very large, on Clubhouse. The platform specifies that priority is given to users who have already created 3 rooms per week. You will have to wait before its creation: a waiting list is in place with an estimated timeframe of three to four weeks.
20. Registering a room on Clubhouse
If Clubhouse formally prohibits the registration of rooms without the knowledge of its users, it should be noted that the platform authorizes this practice on one condition: if the moderator specifies it in the title, with the red round emoji and the mention REC, as well as in the deion of its roomr. For example, @bonjourppc records a daily room titled “The podcast of the day #BonjourPPC” on topics related to digital. Note that there is no native recording function (yet) within the Clubhouse app. You must therefore use other external tools if you wish to record the exchanges of a room.
If you do not tell the participants in your room that a recording is in progress, you are violating the Clubhouse Community Guidelines . In case you use a native tool on your smartphone tor register a room, a message on a red background appears at the top of your screen and you risk the suspension of your account, as well as the person who invited you to the app.
Good to know: all conversations are recorded by the platform - in an encrypted manner - for post-moderation purposes. Clubhouse therefore reserves the right to consult these recordings, particularly when an incident is reported. If the comments exchanged respect the conditions of use of the app, the recording is deleted.
21. Report an incident on Clubhouse
If If you see inappropriate comments or behavior in a room, tap the contact's profile picture, then tap the three dots above the “Follow” button.either block the user, or select the "incident report" function.
22. Participate in a “silent room”
You may have seen “silent rooms” pass by. If the principle may be surprising, the Clubhouse social network being based on voice exchanges between users, this form of room has the sole objective of networking. Join one of these rooms and browse from profile to profile to see which ones you want to follow. If you have optimized your biography, you put all the chances on your side to gain followers by participating in this type of room. You can also raise your hand to go on stage. Be sure to mute your microphone if the moderator accepts your request.
23. Be alerted to new rooms on Clubhouse
To not miss any room on your favorite areas of interest on Clubhouse, follow the users whose room topics interest you the most. You will recievea notification on your smartphone (if you have activated them) when a room, created by a contact or a club that you follow, is in progress. These notifications are also available in the "Activity" tab, by tapping on the bell icon. You will also find notifications from your new subscribers. Note that you can tweet a room link, add it to your calendar or copy the link and send it to other contacts (if you don't use the ping function).
24. Manage notifications on Clubhouse
The management of notifications is accessible from the settings section, which you join by tapping on the nut-shaped icon at the top right of your profile. You can specify the frequency of notifications andsent by the app: Very frequent, frequent, normal, infrequent, verry infrequent.
A "Pause notifications" field is also available if you no longer wish to receive them for a given time:
- For an hour,
- Until tonight,
- Until morning,
- For a week.
25. Add or modify your Twitter or Instagram account on your Clubhouse profile
Go to your profile and press the buttons located under your biography text: “Add Twitter” or “Add Instagram” to add the one of you accounts (or both) to be able to communicate - in particular in writing - with your Clubhouse contacts outside the application. If you want to modifyier the account that you have already connected, go to the settings and press the "Disconnect Twitter" or "Disconnect Instagram" button at the bottom of the screen.
