Two American men died climbing cliffs at a popular rock climbing site on the southeast coast of Mallorca.
The couple - who were 25 and 35 and not named - traveled to the Spanish island from Barcelona on Tuesday for a day of cave climbing near the port of Portocolom .
The area is preferred by climbers who practice solo in deep water, or psicobloc, a style of solo climbing that takes place above water in the hopes of minimizinginjuries.
A spokesman for the Guardia Civil de Mallorca said the alarm was sounded shortly after noon on Tuesday when swimmers nearby who had saw the pair climb with a bag of chalk spotted a body floating in the water by Cueva de es Cossi.
"A loc al lifeguard and some swimmers at nearby gave him first aid but could not resuscitate him, "he said." Then another body was spotted closer to the cave. The maritime rescue service arrived but it didn 't come. 'there was nothing more to do. "
In a statement, the Marine Rescue Service said it had worked with firefighters and local police to recover the body , who were taken to Portocolom.
The Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed the men had been solo in deep water and said the keys of their rental car and other epersonal belongings had been found on the rocks. Their passports were found in the car and the US Consulate was notified. An investigation was opened and autopsies were due to take place on Wednesday.
Two of the world's most successful climbers, Eneko and Iker Pou, expressed their condolences on Twitter.
"Consternation and a lot of pain at the news that we have just received two climbers died while psicoblocking today", they wrote . "All points to a landslide. RIP. "
